Refreshed by the water of the Word

Picture yourself beside a clear, bubbling mountain stream.  What are you feeling?

This past year, I’ve walked along side a number of streams like this one in the Great Smokey Mountain National Park.  I’ve felt all these things:

  • Hopeful.
  • Peaceful.
  • Entranced.
  • Joyful.
  • Curious.
  • Refreshed.

It’s not surprising that “streams of water” or “living water” is an image found throughout the Scripture, representing Life in general, but more specifically blessing and refreshment that comes to us through the God-shaped, God-filled life.  Here are a few of those Scriptures.  Since you probably can’t go sit beside an actual mountain stream right now, sit beside these Scriptures for a while.  Let them bubble through your soul.

For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land, a land with flowing streams, with springs and underground waters welling up in valleys and hills. (Deuteronomy 8:7)

The LORD is my shepherd; I have everything I need. He lets me rest in green meadows; he leads me beside peaceful streams. (Psalm 23:1-2)

As the deer pants for streams of water, so I long for you, O God. (Psalm 42:1)

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High.  (Psalm 46:4)

Springs will gush forth in the wilderness, and streams will water the desert. (Isaiah 35:6)

For my people have done two evil things: They have forsaken me– the fountain of living water. And they have dug for themselves cracked cisterns that can hold no water at all!  (Jeremiah 2:13)

Blessed are those who trust in the LORD, whose trust is the LORD. They shall be like a tree planted by water, sending out its roots by the stream. It shall not fear when heat comes, and its leaves shall stay green; in the year of drought it is not anxious, and it does not cease to bear fruit. (Jeremiah 17:7-8)

But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream. (Amos 5:24)

… those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty. The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life. (John 4:14)

If you believe in me, come and drink! For the Scriptures declare that rivers of living water will flow out from within. (John 7:38)

Then Jesus said …  “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give water as a gift from the spring of the water of life.” (Revelation 21:6)

Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city. On either side of the river is the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, producing its fruit each month; and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. (Revelation 22:1-2)

Now, what are you feeling as you sit beside this stream?
